A new and convenient method for covalent attachment of thioamide groups to the side-walls of carbon nanotubes (SWNT) is presented. Treating SWNTs with 4-aminobenzonitrile and subsequently with thioacetic acid and calcium hydride and in another process with morpholine and sulfur via Willgerodt-kindler (WK) reaction leads to the thioamidation of SWNTs. This approach paves the way for a new chemical functionalization protocol to enhance the potential of SWNTs for further chemical reactions applicable in various fields.
