Abstract:

IntroductionActive Leptospermum honey has non-peroxide antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects that make it suitable for use in the wounds healing. Leptospermum honey is a native of New Zealand from the manuka bush (Leptospermum scoparium). The aim of the study is to compare the efficacy of manuka honey dress- .ing with conventional dressing in skin graft donor sites following a burn injury Material & MethodsThis study was carried out in the department of surgery, Iran University of medical sciences, Tehran, Iran. This is a non-controlled prospective trial, open-label study, side by side of Leptospermum honey and conventional dressing for treatment of donor site for skin grafts. Data was collected from 15 eligible patients with burn wound. Two independent donor sites were formed. One of them treated with activeLeptospermum honey dressing and the other one treated with the conventional method. Information regarding subjects’ demographics, self-reported pain (VAS scale), wounds’ surface areas and bacterial .wound culture was collectedResultsIn the treatment of skin graft donor sites, honey group has a low sense of pain compared to conven : tional group (P=0.001). There was a significant decrease in mean wounds’ surface areas in the honey group compared to the conventional group in three and seven days postoperative (P=0.001). There was no significant difference between honey and conventional dressings with regard to rate of infection (20% in.)honey dressing versus 53.3% in conventional group; P=0.068 Conclusion The results of this study show that active Leptospermum honey dressing offers advantages in accelerate .healing, decrease pain together and antimicrobial for care and treatments of skin graft donor sites
