Immunotherapy in melanoma

Melanoma has always been described as an immunogenic tumor and several immunotherapy strategies have been tested. until 2011 chemotherapy was standard of care for metastatic melanoma with response rate of 15-20 % and no overall survival benefit.Immune checkpoint inhibitors revolutionized the treatment of metastatic/ unresectable melanoma. FDA and EMA approved anti-CTLA4 antibody ipilimumab and anti-PD-1 antibody nivolumab and pembrolizumab for metastatic melanoma.The landscape of melanoma treatment has changed dramatically over the last 7 years, transforming the outcome for patients there is no evidence that the pace of progress is slowing new rationable combinations are being tested focusing on increasing the immune response, reducing toxicity and personalizing treatments for individual patients.
