Designing Materials and Tasks on Citations in Academic Writing Courses

Acquiring skills of appropriate and effective use of citations is undeniably crucial for success in any form of scholarly writing. Established writers as well as new writers are required to posses advanced academic citation skills to display their knowledge of the field, justify their own claims, and rhetorically persuade the acceptance of the claims through the strategic use of citations. This paper offers materials and tasks developed for teaching citations in EAP/ ESP courses based on the findings of previous research which showed the novice writers’ unawareness of various rhetorical functions of citation use. Explicit instructions of the multiple layers of citations could benefit students and facilitate their acquisition. Thus in this paper, the materials are developed to raise students’ awareness of citation norms in their own discipline and prepare them for effective use of citations in their academic writing.
