Abstract:

For the next two to three generations there are three overridingdangers to the health of the human population: Nuclear war, climate changes and increasing class differences. Regardingnuclear war - the greatest danger to the health and survival ofmankind (WHO) only prevention is effective. When ten yearsago it became clear that the nuclear weapon states were not goingto give up their nuclear weapons, however useless, more than 500NGOs got together and started ICAN, the movement to prohibitall nuclear weapons. Hopefully the prohibition will graduallyincrease the nuclear threshold. We need a similar network to prevent the most likely futurecatastrophe, the breaking of the 1.5° global warming ceiling. Ifthat happens, before the end of the century two billions or morepeople will be climate refuges. They will be met with soldiers andweapons. Only prevention, inspiring us all to change our wholelifestyle, will help. The third threat to health and to peace comes from the increasingdifference between rich and poor within countries. Artificialintelligence will exacerbate these differences. Civil unrest or civilwar will be common. In many countries we will see thepopulation divided in a small superrich and a large poor fraction.Alcoholism, narcotic abuse and hopeless will be everywhere. Toprevent this epidemic of poverty is a political problem, but themedical and humanistic NGOs must speak now of prevention, andspeak loudly.
