Abstract:

The concept of management commitment to safety, especially involving human factors is mainly dependent on the upper-level management of organizations. Management commitment to safety refers to the extent that upper-level management identifies safety as a core value or guiding principles of the organization. Occupational accidents and incidents are symptoms of a lack of management commitment to safety, as most of the accidents could be prevented. The main objectives of this study were to evaluate the management commitment to safety and to examine the differences between managers and non-managers perspectives on management commitment to safety in the metal products industry in Guilan Province, Iran. A total of 714 respondents from 14 companies participated in the survey. The results showed that the management commitment to safety was not strong in the metal products industry in Guilan Province. An Independent Sample’s t-Test was applied to understand managers and non-managers perspectives on management commitment to safety. The results revealed that there was a significant difference between the mean management commitment score for managers and nonmanagers. In other words, managers have a higher mean score on management commitment to safety (18.37) than non-managers (17.28) in the metal products industry in Guilan Province, Iran.
