Post Partum Depression (PPD) has been in the core of attention of some studies. PPD is one of the most important and common disorder that affects some mothers after childbirth. It is more severe than postpartum blue (a mild depression after delivery in short time).postpartum depression has negative and disruptive effects on both mother and newborn. The diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorder is defined as PPD which it has five or more of the following symptoms at least two weeks: 1.insomnia/hyper insomnia 2.Appetite changes 3.Feeling of hopelessness or guilt 4.Decreased concentration 5.Suicide 6.Fatigue 7.Psychomotor agitation or retardationThe mentioned episodes appear within four weeks post partum and it might be last to one year. Many factors lead to PPD such as ; unwanted pregnancy, previous history of PPD , prenatal depression, low socioeconomic status , low educational , obesity and physical symptoms . Recent studies have revealed that postpartum depression has an association with vitamin D deficiency. In this review we evaluated the relation between vitamin D and PPD. METHODS: This systematic review is based on 10 articles and new journals from pubmed ,science direct and international scholary research notices. These data are according to following up women during pregnancy and postpartum and measuring the serum levels of 25_hydroxy vitamin . RESULTS: Evidences suggested that there is a relation between low levels of 25_hydroxy and high PPD scores. Vitamin D has a immunomodulatory role through its anti-inflammatory and anti-autoimmune action in the nervous system. vitamin D is involved in the regulation of calcium _ mediated neural function. CONCLUSION: It can be concluded that vitamin D deficiency might be a risk factor that it can affects the development of PPD. Moreover, the risk of postpartum deprssion might be decrease by taking vitamin D supplements during pregnancy.
