خلاصه مقاله:
Background: Over the recent years, there have been remarkable advances in the chances of survival of patients treated in burn centers. Thermal burns are the most common kind of burns. These burns occur when flames, hot metals, scalding liquids, or steam are exposed to skin. A simple and accurate system for causes estimating the probability of death would be useful in counseling patients and making medical decisions. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of all 2845 patients with burn injuries admitted from 2013 to 2018 to Ghotb Al Din and Amir al-Mu minin hospital. Demographic and clinical data of patients were recorded in hospital registry system. Using logistic-regression analysis, we developed probability estimates for the prediction of mortality based on type of burn injuries. All the categorical variables were compared with a Pearson Chi-square test. Data were analyzed in SPSS software (version 24) for Windows. Results: Of the 2845 patients (mean [±SD] age, 51±13 years), 62.7% were male and the rest were female. Among the various causes of burn, the most cause (36.3%) and the highest mortality rate (69.6%) was related to fires. In total, three risk factors for death were identified: age greater than 60 years, more than 20 percent of body surface area burned, and burn injury with fires. Conclusions: The principal cause of mortality in our unit was burn injury with fires. Our data showed that greater attention should be paid to patients over 60 years old, greater burned area, and burns injury due to fires. Furthermore, individualized burn prevention and treatment strategy based on related risk factors should be approved.
