خلاصه مقاله:
Introduction: Operating room (OR) is one of the most important parts of any burn center and its efficiency directly effects on burn center income. Appropriate function of OR can save many lives and improve the outcome of burn patients. This study was designed to evaluate the efficiency of OR in a referral burn center in the northeast of Iran.Materials and methods: All three ORs of surgical unit of Imam Reza Burn center were investigated. Information about all procedures performed in three consecutive months (August 23, 2018 – November 22, 2018) was collected from the hospital information system. Preparation, induction, procedure, and recovery time for each procedure were calculated. The sum of preparation, induction and procedure time was considered as operative time. Mean of salary and benefit cost for each procedure and the operative hour was estimated. Results: Totally in 63 active days, 409 procedures were performed (6.5 procedures per day). The mean of patient preparation and induction time was 20±12 minutes. The mean of procedure time and recovery time was 104±0.59 and 48±26 minutes respectively. Only 711.5 out of 2268 working hours (31.4%) have been spent on performing procedures. Salary and benefit cost (except fee for service), was 3370467 IRR (~33 USD) for each procedure hour and 2808214 IRR (~28 USD) for each operative hour. Conclusion: It seems that OR efficiency is low in this burn center. More investigations about OR efficiency in other burn centers of this country are suggested. Implementation of appropriate protocols and investigation on details of activities in OR may be helpful to improve OR efficiency.
