Abstract:

In this work, permeation models for ideal and non-ideal polymeric mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) filled with porous (permeable) and non-porous (impermeable) fillers are provided for prediction of effective permeability of gases. For the gas permeability of mixed matrix membranes containing low and moderate amount of filler loading into matrix, modified Maxwell and Bruggeman models are applied, respectively. In contrast, at high loading of filler particles into polymeric matrix, Lewis-Nielsen and Pal models are employed to prediction of effective permeation. To estimate the effective permeability of membranes comprising non-permeable particles (non-porous fillers), the Maxwell equation was introduced. Non-ideal membranes at the polymer/filler interface have defects such as voids, rigidification of the polymer chains and blockage of particle pores by polymer chains, for each of these cases, a separate permeation model is provided.
