Abstract:

Sandwich panels made by fibre metal laminates (FML) facesheets and foam cores are investigated in flexural condition and modeled by ABAQUS FE software. The model is validated using the results obtained by experimental work. To change the behavior of sandwich panel in bending loads, shape memory alloy (SMA) wires were modeled in the FML facesheeets and ABAQUS UMAT subroutine is used to analyze the shape memory alloys. Three types of sandwich panels including panels without SMA wire, two SMA wires with 0% pre-strain and two SMA wires with 5% pre-strain were studied. The specimens are modeled for flexural loading according to standards. By changing different properties and sequences of the layers in the facesheets and different core materials, the optimum state of the structure for gaining higher energy absorption during the flexural test is determined.
