Abstract:

Introduction This study aimed to evaluate the biomimetic characterization of marine derived cilica/gelatin scaffolds for bone tissue engineering applications. Objectives Use of marine organisms in human tissue engineering goes back to 1970. Crystal similarity, biocompatibility and bioactivity properties make them suitable candidate for bone replacement therapy. Methods In this study, porous scaffolds were prepared using a freeze-drying method by marine derived silica (Sio2) and gelatin. To investigate the link between gelatin and silica, the scaffold was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The Size and morphology of fabricated scaffolds were determined using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. To evaluate the ability of scaffold to form hydroxyapatite crystals, they were immersed in simulated body fluid at time intervals of 7, 14 and 21 days. Cell culture and MTT assays were carried out for in vitro biocompatibility.Results The results reveal that silica/ gelatin scaffolds have network of interconnected pores with an suitable pore size. Soaking samples in SBF solution was confirmed their bioactivity ability.The MTT assays revealed that Bioactive nanocomposite enhance proliferation of the cells. ConclusionsOverall, marine based nanocomposite can be applied as efficient biomaterial in bone regenerative medicine.
