Abstract:

IntroductionSkin wounds are a significant public health problem and Treatment of wounds remains a challenging clinical problem for medical teams and researchers. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the healing effects of Honey/PVA hydrogel loaded by erythromycin as wound dressing on skin wounds in rats, based on histo-morphometrical criteria.MethodsIn this study, 60 male rats, with1.5 ×1.5 cm full-thickness wounds on their backs were divided into four groups: PVA-H-E group, was treated with a PVA/honey with erythromycin, PVA-H was treated with a PVA/honey, untreated group (control), and base group, which were treated with the PVA alone for 14 days. Skin biopsies were prepared on 4, 7 and 14 days for microscopic analyses.ResultsThe Stereological analysis including mean area of wound, length of vessels, number density of fibroblast, macrophage, basal cell and volume of epidermis, dermis and fibrous tissue were done. Wounds area in the Honey/PVA hydrogel with erythromycin group were significantly (p<0.05) smaller than in the other group. The numerical density of fibroblasts, macrophage and basal cell, and volume of epidermis in the Honey/PVA hydrogel with erythromycin group were significantly higher than other groups.ConclusionAccording to our results Honey/PVA hydrogel with erythromycin may promote early wound healing, and has positive influence on fibroblast proliferation and repithelization, and recommend its administration after further clinical investigations
