Abstract:
IntroductionPrevious studies demonstrated beneficial effects of Silymarin (SM) on various disease. However, low bioavailability of SM restricted its use.ObjectivesIn present study protective effects of SM loaded Poly Lactic-co-Glycolic Acid nanoparticles (NSM) in Mono iodoacetate (MIA)-induced osteoarthritis was evaluated.MethodsIn experimental groups, fourteen days after injection of MIA (into right knee), SM (50 mg/kg) or NSM (50 mg/kg) were administered daily for two weeks. The joints were removed in 10% formalin for assessment of histological changes. Histological changes of the joints were evaluated by using a modified mankin scoring.ResultsMatrix staining, cellularity and total Mankin scoring of articular cartilage were significantly increased in SM-treated rats in comparison to the MIA group (p < 0.05). These impacts were more pronounced in NSM-treated rats.ConclutionThis information indicate that NSM improves the OA in knee joints ofrats
