Abstract:

IntroductionRegenerative endodontics is defined as biology-based methods used to replace damaged structures, including dentin and root structures, as well as pulp-dentin complex. Immature teeth are susceptible to infections due to trauma, anatomical anomalies, and caries. Traditional endodontic treatments for immature teeth, such as apexification, will prevent future infections. However, in these methods, the development of the tooth does not continue and can lead to fractures. Regenerative endodontic procedures (REPs) have evolved over the past decades and can now be used as a different treatment for immature teeth.ObjectivesThe aim of this study is to investigate the procedures of endodontic regeneration and its applications in the clinic.MethodsThe search used the combined search terms Regenerative endodontic procedures, regeneration, stem cells and pulp in the PubMed, Embase, and google scholar for databases in May 2018.ResultsImmature teeth with necrotic pulp with poor prognosis can be treated with REPs. REP may be the first treatment option for immature teeth with pulp necrosis.ConclusionSignificant improvements in Regenerative Endodontics allow some of the factors contributing to the regulation of the molecules and the repair of the pulp-dentin complex damage. REP leads to the healing of apical periodontitis, the continuation of root development, and in some cases, improves the vital responses of the pulp. Despite the clinical success, it seems that these procedures, rather than the actual regeneration of the tissue, tend to lead more to the healing process.
