Abstract:

Hydrogels have been intensively investigated for tissue engineering, cell therapy and biopharmaceutical applications. Hydrogels catalyzed by enzymes serve as an efficient and effective platform for biomedical applications owing to high water content, such as high biocompatibility, low mechanical irritation of surrounding tissues when they are implanted in vivo, and high permeability for oxygen, nutrients, and other water-soluble. Here, we propose methods for hydrogel-based biomedical engineering through enzyme-mediated hydrogelation reactions. Here we introduced methods of controlling the characteristics of resultant hydrogels from the perspective of biomedical and biopharmaceutical applications. In addition, the use of hydrogels for biofabrication of spherical and filament-like vehicles was explored. The great potential of applying the hydrogelation system was demonstrated by explaining the scope of various phenol substituted polymers resulting in hydrogels with a variety of characteristics, tunable hydrogelation times ranging from several seconds to hours, and by the possibility of controlling hydrogel properties. It is expected thatfurther cooperation between medicine and engineering researchers will accelerate the development of this field
