Abstract:

Using combined heat and power generation systems especially portable type ones, has become popular by new residential communities emergence. Performance improvement of these systems is one of the main goals of researchers. Real-time control is the most efficient way of performance improvement. In this study, a real-time intelligence optimizer controller for a combined heat and power generation system which is used in residential complexes is purposed and its performance evaluated in detail after validation by experimental data. The controller provides optimum ignition timing and equivalence ratio for engine using particle swarm optimization algorithm and virtual engine. Tow-zone thermodynamic model is employed for EF7 Methane fueled spark ignition engine simulation as the virtual engine. Fuel consumption is defined as optimization goal and providing demanded power and heat are considered as two constraints. A case study is done for different climates of Mazandaran, Iran and optimum results of controller due to inlet parameters changes are reported in the following. Finally, controller response speed to the load power is illustrated in detail. Results show the linear trends of fuel consumption of engine via both load power and ambient temperature, after applying optimum ignition timing and equivalence ratio while optimum equivalence ratio is increased via both ambient temperature and load heat. In addition, primary optimization, achieving load power, was provided by less than 4 iterations (2 seconds) and optimum amounts were defined by less than 20 seconds in each process.
