Abstract:

Introduction & Aim: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common cancers in the worldwide. Sodium butyrate (NaBt) is a short chain fatty acid (SCFAs) and it is the histone deacetylase inhibitor. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common cancers in the worldwide. Sodium butyrate (NaBt) is a short chain fatty acid (SCFAs) and it is the histone deacetylase inhibitor. .SCFAs have been shown to have anti-tumor effects related to the induction of tumor cell death. The aim of this study was investigating the effect of NaBt on Sw480 cell line. Methods: Sw480 cell line was cultured in RPMI-1640 medium supplemented with 10% FBS. Cells were treated with various concentrations of NaBt (from 6.25mM to 200mM) at 24, 48 and 72 hours. Untreated cells were used as a control group. The cytotoxicity was evaluated by MTT assay. IC50 was determined graphically. Results:Our study revealed that NaBt can inhibit the proliferation of cells via a concentration and time-dependent manner. Conclusion: The modification of epigenetic markers, such as histone acetylation by pharmacological agents has been hypothesized to play a role in cancer progression. The current study indicated that NaBt had anticancer activities and inhibit growth Sw480 human colorectal cancer cell line. Therefore, an effective inhibitor of histone deacetylase may prove useful in the treatment of colorectal cancer.
