Abstract:

Ttype 2 diabetes is more likely to appear as people age, where the pancreas produces insulin, but the body cannot use it effectively. Western medications are used for such a disease, most of which frequently associated with severe adverse drug reactions and high costs of treatment. A great number of medical plants are currently used to treat diabetes. The aim of this review was to investigate herbs suitable for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. For this purpose, we investigated in the databases, including Science direct, PubMed, Wiley, Scopus, and Springer, to find the most suitable herbs. In the present study, seven herbs were found to show great benefits to patients with NIDDM; these include Aloe vera (helping protect and repair the beta cells in the pancreas that produce insulin), Cinnamon (adding sweetness without any additional sugar), Bitter melon (containing a lectin that reduces blood glucose concentrations), Milk thistle (containing silymarin that is a compound with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties), Fenugreek (containing fibers and chemicals that help to slow down the digestion of carbohydrates and sugar), Gymnema (inhibiting sugar absorption), and Ginger (helping reduce blood sugar levels and regulate insulin response in people with diabetes).Medical plants show to be effective in the treatment of type 2 diabetes, representing more affordable with less side effects compared synthetic drugs.
