Investigating the Attention to Parameters of Environmental Health Related to Breast Cancer

Introduction & Aim: The association of environmental pollution with the risk of breast cancer is limited. The most dangerous environmental factors are radiation exposure and alcohol and dietary intake. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the status of the publication of articles on breast cancer and environmental parameters in Iranian medical science journals. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted for a two-year period (2013-2014) during the summer of 2016. In order to achieve the study objectives, all Persian articles of medical journals of Iran University of Medical Sciences were reviewed by visiting the websites of university journals or through the Megh-Iran database. In order to extract the data, a special collection form suitable to the research objectives was used. Data processing was performed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: A total of 13101 articles from 125 publications affiliated with 47 medical universities of the country showed that over a period of two years, 342 (2.6% of the total articles) were published in relation to cancer. The journals of Tehran and Isfahan University of Medical Sciences each with 31 and Kashan s publication of 25 articles have the highest share of articles published on the subject. Breast cancer with an abundance of 80 articles has the highest rate of reporting in the form of research papers. Of these, 14 (17.5%) were related to the environmental parameters associated with breast cancer. Conclusion: Given the wide-ranging nature of the issue and the increasing incidence of breast cancer and the direct connection of environmental parameters with this type of cancer, attention is needed by researchers in the medical and health sciences.
