Abstract:
Phonon coupling as an important issue in phonon engineering is discussed in this paper. Since phonons are described by mechanical or elastic waves in wave mechanics, the Navier equation must be used to study coupling in phononics. Slab waveguide is considered aspropagating medium for phononic waves. Inspired by coupled mode theory in photonics, this theory is developed for elastic wave coupling. The material of core and cladding layers in slab waveguide are considered to be copper and silicon, respectively becausethe elastic wave velocities in copper is smaller than the silicon. The coupled mode equations which are obtained by perturbation method, are simulated for shear waves to demonstrate the coupling phenomena. Moreover, the finite element method (FEM) is used to illustrate the wave propagation in a structure including two coupled slab waveguides. Furthermore, the mode splitting through coupling is investigated and the generation of even and odd modes are demonstrated through Eigenfrequency analysis.
