Abstract:
In this paper, a general review on membrane bioreactor (MBR) processes has been done. MBR processes, the properties of corresponding membranes, configurations of the process have been studied. As well, the application confine of MBR (especially as wastewater treatment) in different industries, fouling problems and MBR markets have been investigated. In addition, some recent advances in MBR process were presented. In comparison to the conventional activated sludge process, the MBR treatment has many advantages including: high quality of treated water free of suspended solids (SS), small footprint and reactor requirements, reduced waste sludge amount, and easy maintenance and management. However, the main restriction is still remained: investment of MBRs. Some of the MBR applications are: fuel gas production, wastewater and sewage treatment, and waste gas treatment.
