Abstract:

A study was conducted to determine the response of a tomato yield and weed control to six mulch materials (organic and inorganic) and metribuzin in a randomized complete block design with three replications at College of Agriculture, Shiraz University. In the case of Amaranthus retroflexus the longest and shortest time of weed emergence was observed in plastic mulches (28 days after transplanting) and organic mulches (21 days after transplanting) as well as metribuzin (21 days after transplanting), respectively. For Chenopodium album the results were very different as the longest time for weed emergence was found with coco peat (29 days after transplanting) and the shortest time was observed in clear plastic and sawdust mulches (23.33 days after transplanting). The highest marketable tomato yield was achieved with black plastic mulch (19.21 kg m-2) while the lowest yield (3.02 kg m-2) was observed in the plots with sawdust treatment.
