Abstract:

If the main function of cytochrome P450 enzymes in plants is the metabolism of hormones and of the so-called natural compounds , incidentally they also metabolize herbicides and other pesticides, in a phase I detoxification step, paving the way for further conjugation, in a process similar to drug metabolism in human tissues. When this metabolism is activated in weeds, it leads to weed herbicide tolerance and proliferation in crop fields. For this reason, P450 overexpression in plants can be used to confer herbicides resistance or as selection marker for plant transformation. P450-dependent metabolism can be also the reason for herbicide/insecticide synergy and incompatibility (Werck-Reichhart et al., 2000; Powles and Yu, 2010). Several examples of P450-mediated herbicide metabolism, detoxification or activation, will be described, together with the role of herbicide safeners in agriculture.
