Abstract:

Introduction: Epulis Fissuratum (EF) is the local hyperplasic enlargement and fibrosis mucosal tissue; and, its main etiologic factor is the usage of an ill-fitting denture. The treatment of these lesions is essential because any change in the normal tissue of the oral mucosa causes an accumulation of the opportunistic microflora, such as the fungus (e.g., oral Candidiasis) exist in the oral cavities, which can lead to different oral diseases. Therefore, this study aims to report an interesting observation on the response of EF to drug therapy.Case Report: A 62-year-old female patient presented to the Dental Clinic of Semnan University of Medical Sciences (SUMS) while suffering from a prolonged oral ulcer. EF diagnosis was suggested regarding the clinical appearance as well as the association of denture with the lesion. Hence, gargling a suspension of 100,000 units of Nystatin was prescribed four times daily, along with, optimal oral hygiene with denture removal at night was also recommended. Subsequently, during follow-up sessions, the gradual improvement was observed until the disease completely disappeared. Conclusion: With regard to the relationship between EF and the accumulation of microorganisms, a course of drug therapy is suggested as a preceded step before surgery.
