Abstract:

To evaluate the frequency and risk factors of unintentional parathyroidectomy afterthyroidectomy in our Jordanian population. This retrospective investigation enrolled 103 subjectsassigned for thyroidectomy at King Hussein Hospital, King Hussein medical city, Amman, Jordan duringthe period Jan 2012- Aug 2013.The patient’s demographics reported age, sex, preoperative FNAdiagnosis and postoperative histopathological reports. The thyroid surgical procedure (subtotal or totalthyroidectomy with lobectomy or completion thyroidectomy) was achieved by senior surgeons.Histopathology reports were reviewed for the presence and characteristics of parathyroid tissue glandsand thyroid pathology. For statistical analysis, the chi-square test and Fisher exact test were used toevaluate statistical significance. P≤.05 was be considered statistically significant. Eleven (11) subjects(10.7 %) had their parathyroid glands incidentally removed. There was significant difference between themean age of patients with and without accompanying parathyroidectomy (35.5 vs. 50 years, P≤0.05).Nine(81.8%) patients with accompanying parathyroidectomy had only one parathyroid gland excised, onepatient (9.1 %) had two removed and one patient (9.1 %) had three removed. The frequency ofaccompanying parathyroidectomy after thyroidectomy was 10.7% which is within the internationallimits.Risk factors were female sex, lobectomy thyroidectomy and multinodular goiter.
