Evaluation of the Field Compaction Characteristics of GravellyClay & Pure Clay as the Core Material of Gotvand Dam

Gotvand dam with a height of 180m is one of the largest fill dams in Iran. The dam is a zoned embankment dam with a central core. The core has a high volume around 3.5 million cubic meters and it would be necessary to optimize the parameters that may affect the construction process. Effect of some important factors, such as layer thickness, number of roller passes and material moisture content, is evaluated on the compaction behavior of core material. According to the results, the optimum values for layer thickness, number of roller passes, material moisture content and also a suitable criterion for quality control of compaction process is determined and recommended for the construction of the dam core.
