Abstract:

Anchors are generally provided to support important structures such as transmission towers, buried pipelines under water etc. Therefore, the damages associated with anchor failure under seismic loading may cause significant loss of life and wealth. In this paper, the upper bound method is used to compute seismic uplift capacity of horizontal anchors beneath slopes for a wide range of friction angles, seismic coefficients, embedment ratios, and ground inclination angles. It is observed that both horizontal and vertical seismic coefficients have decreasing effect on uplift capacity of anchors. Moreover, the uplift capacity of anchors also decreases with increase in ground inclination angle. The results of present study are in good agreement with some of the earlier investigations available in the literature.
