Unbounded earth materials (e.g. soils) are the biggest piece of the earth-fill structures. The assessment of the in situ properties of these materials in terms of density, strength and etc., is of concern. The present study has been conducted to evaluate the efficiency of the new innovative device, Advance Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (ADCP), for estimating the density by performing a comparative study between the Clegg Impact Hammer (ASTM D 5874 – 95) and (ADCP) tests. In the first process, compacted samples were prepared in the laboratory with different molding moisture contents and then subjected to ADCP and CIH tests. Second process was focused on conducting in situ ADCP and CIH tests on existing compacted soils. The test results shown that the (ADCP) correlates relatively well with the Clegg Impact Value (CIV) for both the laboratory and field tests. The ADCP data from laboratory and field tests have an exponentially agreement with the dry density results.
