Abstract:

Background/Aims: The promotion of Breast Feeding is a simple and efficient strategy in reducing morbidity and mortality among newborns worldwide. Domperidone is a blocker of dopamine receptors, which causes prolactin release. We aimed to determine the efficacy of domperidone on amount of the breast milk secretion among the mothers with low-milk-production.Material and Methods: This interventional study in quasi-experimental designs (pre-post testing), included 16 consecutive low-milk-producing women attending to Azad University Hospitals in Tehran, Iran from 2013 to 2014. They were enrolled in this study after screening. Breast-milk volume as well as the serum levels of prolactin were determined before and after domperidone administration and compared. Results: The mean breast milk volume was 173.75 ± standard deviation [SD] 47.73ml before intervention and 326.88 ± [SD] 26.19 ml, after intervention with statistically significant increase of %53.1(95% CI, P < 0.00001) in daily milk production with domperidone treatment. In addition, the mean serum prolactin level was 161.19 ± 19.13 and 254.0 ± 25.53 ng/ml, before and after medications respectively, that showed significant increase of %63.46 (95% CI, P=0.0001). Conclusion: It may be concluded that domperidone would result in augmenting the milk production among nursing mothers. There was no drug-related side effect for mothers and infants.
