Background: Nurses who work in intensive care unit (ICU) are confronted with multiple stressful factors. Resilience is one of the most important human abilities that cause effectively adaptation with difficult situations and psychological stresses. This property can help to improve nurses professional commitment. Therefore, this study was conducted with the aim of association between resilience and professional commitment among nurses working in ICU. Methods: In this descriptive-analytic study, 200 nurses working in ICU in hospitals affiliated to Birjand University of Medical Sciences in South Khorasan province was enrolled with census method in 1397. The inclusion criteria included at least one year of work experience in a hospital, had at least one month of work experience in specialized departments, and had direct care relationship with patients. Also, Failure to complete the questionnaire was the exclusion criteria. the data collection tools consisted of three questionnaires of personal and job characteristics (which included information such as gender, age, marital status, employment type, service history, work area, job history and Shift work), Resilience questionnaire (CD-RISC)(which includes The notion of individual competence, trust in individual instincts, tolerance of negative emotions, positive acceptance of change and safe relationships, control and spiritual influences( with Alpha-Cronbach s coefficient of (0.89) and professional commitment questionnaire (ATS) (which includes Nursing comprehension, nursing profession acceptance, nursing staff interaction, survival in nursing) with Alpha-Cronbach s coefficient of (0.74) were used to data collection. Descriptive and inferential statistics (Mann-Whitney, and Kruskal-Wallis) were used for data analysis through SPSS version 16 at a significant level of p≤0.05. Results: 220 questionnaires were distributed in this study. A total of 200 nurses working in special sectors completed and delivered the questionnaires. 75.5% of them were women, 76% were married, 56% were aged between 20-30 years old, 37.5% were employed in ICU, 50% work experience less than 5 years, 93/5% with Circulating shifts, and 38% were employed. Most nurses reported a high rate of profession commitment (76%) and a moderate rate of resilience (70%). Also, there was a positive and significant relationship between resilience and profession commitment (r = 0/22 P=0/001).Conclusion: Regarding the significant relationship between resilience and professional commitment, it is recommended to put educational strategies for increase resilience in the nursing education program to increase the level of professional commitment in nurses. So, one of the biggest nursing challenges, that is shortage of nursing staff, can be reduced.
