Abstract:

Over the last two decades, there has been a rapid development of geotechnical centrifuge centres in many countries worldwide, China in particular. Centrifuge testing has become a preferred method of physical experiments for many geotechnical and geo-environmental applications. In this paper, the principles and the applications of geotechnical centrifuge modelling to solve four types of soil-structure interaction problems are introduced and described. These four interaction problems include the correction of building tilt, excavation and shielding effects on piles, multiple tunnel interaction. New insights from these four types of centrifuge model tests are revealed and discussed.
