Abstract:

Background: Humanin, a mitochondrial derived 24-amino acid peptide, prevents cell damage from stress/injury in differ-ent tissue/cells, including male germ cells. The current study was designed to investigate the correlation between Humanin and the qualitative and quantitative properties of seminal fluid, in parallel with the oxidant and antioxidant balance in the se-men of patients with asthenozoospermia.Materials and Methods: The current study, which was con-ducted for a year, involved 60 fertile and 60 asthenozoospermic subfertile men belonging to Hilla City, Iraq. Seminal fluid was obtained from the participants before and after treatment with zinc supplements. The Humanin, total antioxidant, total reac-tive oxygen species, and peroxiredoxin levels were assessed us-ing the spermatozoa and seminal plasma samples. Results: Humanin levels, total antioxidant status and peroxire-doxin levels were significantly lower while the concentration of reactive oxygen species were significantly higher in subfertile men than in healthy men. Conclusion: Humanin levels is correlates with oxidant/antioxi-dant balance and linked to semen quality via.
