(Auto-) Immune Epilepsy: Mechanisms of Inflammatory Epileptogenic Neurodegeneration

(Auto-) immune inflammation predominantly affecting the allocortex of the amygdala and hippocampus aswell as the neocortex recently emerged as a major cause of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy and epileptic encephalopathy. In both major parts of the cortex,neurons are assumed to be targets of adaptive B cell and T cell responses causing aberrant neuronal excitability together with variable neurodegenerative effects promoting the emergence of seizures and epilepsy together with a variety of neuropsychiatric symptoms. Inmy talk, I will give an overview on the current concept of immune-mediated epileptogenic neurodegeneration.
