Abstract:

Backgrounds: Cervical cancer affects women in the time that they are critical to economic and social stability. The aim of this study is assessment of socio-economic consequences of cervical cancer.Material and Method : In this review, the Pubmed, Scopus, and ISI web of science databases were searched. We assessed 2832 related articles to December 2018. 48 studies had inclusion criteria.Result: The studies have calculated cervical cancer economic costs in various ways. Hospitalization costs were the highest direct costs. There is a dramatic increase in costs with the increase in age and stage of disease. However, the costs are less for people aged 75 and up and for stage 4; it was because of less invasive treatment received by older women and due to the limited choice of treatment in advanced stages. The costs for persons who had screened 6 month to 5 years before diagnosis were lower. Non- economic costs such as lost years of life, saving life with early diagnosis and treatment of illness, suffering from illness, loss of productivity, and drop in annual production are more than three-quarters of the overall economic burden of the disease. Conclusion: The burden of this disease is high. Most studies have reported their estimates are less than the actual burden of the disease on communities. Few studies have focused on indirect costs related to cervical cancer. It is suggested that studies be carried out on the effects of the disease on family members, relatives and especially the spouse of the affected woman. Early detection of cancer can save lives and reduce health care costs; these health benefits and money savings can be used to evaluate the cost-effectiveness and promote screening regularly
