Abstract:

The effect of Al -5Ti-1B master alloy on the grain refinement and tensile properties of AZ63 magnesium alloy has been investigated, both in as-cast and extruded conditions. The microstructures, ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation values showed that the addition of 0.6% Al-5Ti-1B provides the optimum condition not only for the structural refinement but also for tensile testing improvement. The results depicted that the grain size was reduced from  95 μm to  52 μm and UTS enhancement was found to be by 36% in the as-casting state. Also, after extrusion process, the UTS improved up to 62% in comparison with the as-cast condition, indicating that TiB2 particles may act as the main barrier to the growth of the grain boundary during dynamic recrystallization.
