Abstract:
The effect of Al -5Ti-1B master alloy on the grain refinement and tensile properties of AZ63 magnesium alloy has been investigated, both in as-cast and extruded conditions. The microstructures, ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation values showed that the addition of 0.6% Al-5Ti-1B provides the optimum condition not only for the structural refinement but also for tensile testing improvement. The results depicted that the grain size was reduced from 95 μm to 52 μm and UTS enhancement was found to be by 36% in the as-casting state. Also, after extrusion process, the UTS improved up to 62% in comparison with the as-cast condition, indicating that TiB2 particles may act as the main barrier to the growth of the grain boundary during dynamic recrystallization.
