Abstract:

Backgrounds and Objectives: Diabetes is a disease with high incidence and various complications such as neuropathy and nephropathy. The aim of this study was evaluating effect of ethanolic extract of red onion on blood biochemical factors in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Materials and Methods: This experimental study was performed on 40 male Wistar rats. For induction of diabetes, streptozotocin (55 mg/kg) was injected intraperitoneally to male Wistar rats. All animals were randomly divided to 5 groups (n=8). Diabetic rats located to 4 groups including 3 treatment groups with ethanolic extract of red onion (125 and 250 mg/kg/day) for 4 weeks and one diabetic control group (DC). In addition, the fifth group was considered as health control group (HC). Finally, blood biochemical factors including, fasting blood glucose , total cholesterol, Low-density lipoprotein (LDL), High-density lipoprotein (HDL), Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST), Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT), triglycerides and Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1C) were measured by laboratory kits. Findings: our data showed that administration of this extract at all dose led to improvement of some biochemical factors including, fasting blood glucose, cholesterol, LDL, HDL, AST, Glycosylated hemoglobin in diabetic rats. This extract at dose of 250 mg had no effect in reduction of ALT. Also, this extract had no significant effect in lowering of triglycerides. Conclusion: Ethanolic extract of red onion improves some blood biochemical factors in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.
