Abstract:

Background and Objective: Osteoarthritis (OA) is known as one of the most common musculoskeletal diseases. Elaeagnus Angustifolia is a medicinal plant with anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Few studies reported effects of Elaeagnus Angustifolia supplementation on patients with OA. This review summarizes what is known regarding the effects of Elaeagnus Angustifolia supplementation on clinical symptom and biochemical factors in patients with OA. Search Method: Databases including PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE and Web of Science were searched until September 31th, 2018. Keywords used in this study were Elaeagnus Angustifolia and Osteoarthritis. Finding: In a study reported that Elaeagnus angustifolia either alone or in combination with Boswellia extracts significantly improved pain severity in patients with OA. Also, it has been reported that there was no any significant difference between Elaeagnus angustifolia and ibuprofen in pain scores among patients with OA. In addition, Elaeagnus angustifolia significantly increased IL-10 and decreased MMP-1. However, there were no any changes in the MMP-13 and IL-1β. Conclusions: Administration of Elaeagnus angustifolia supplementation had beneficial effects in the controlling clinical symptoms of patients with OA. However, Elaeagnus angustifolia improved some inflammatory factors; more studies are needed in the future for evaluating effects of Elaeagnus angustifolia in more treatment duration and large sample of patients with OA.
