Abstract:

Background and Objective: Clinical trials have shown controversial findings on the cardiovascular protective effects of quercetin in humans. The aim of this study was to summarize the evidence of the effects of quercetin supplementation on plasma lipid profiles, blood pressure (BP) and glucose homeostasis by performing a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Search Method: Electronic search was conducted in MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Scopus databases from their inception to July 2018, to identify RCTs that assessed the impact of quercetin on lipid profiles, BP and glucose levels. Findings: Seventeen trials comprising 896 participants were included in the overall analysis. The pooled results showed that quercetin significantly lowered systolic BP (WMD, -3.09 mmHg; 95% CI -4.59, -1.59; P=0.0001) and diastolic BP (WMD, -2.86 mmHg; 95% CI -5.09, -0.63; P=0.01). In subgroup analysis, a significant change in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and triglycerides (TG) were observed in trials with parallel design and subjects with the consumption of quercetin for ≥ 8 weeks. Conclusion: Our findings showed a significant benefit from quercetin intake in decreasing BP in humans. Moreover, quercetin consumption significantly changes the HDL-C and TG in subjects with the consumption of quercetin for ≥ 8 weeks.
