Abstract:

Background and Objective: one of the society groups whom are at more risk of tooth decay, are pregnant women; extensive changes in body of them comprise oral and dental conditions. The aim of this study is to examine Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth (DMFT) index among pregnant women in Mazandaran province, northern of Iran.Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study we have used a questionnaire including relevant questions to demographic information. Collected questionnaires were answered by 1842 pregnant women in the Age range between 18 and 32 years old in 2016 (between February - May). All participants had general physical health without any acute or chronic disease particularly oral disease. Collected data were analyzed by SPSS version 19.0 software with descriptive statistics. Chi-square test and T-test was used in multivariate analysis. In this study, The P< 0.05 was considered as significant value. Findings: A significant relationship was observed between education level and care level of oral and dental health (P<0.05) but there was not any significant relationship between job and care level of oral and dental health (P> 0.05). The range of DMFT index among pregnant women in Mazandaran Province was 13±6. A significant relationship was observed between DMFT index and awareness level of pregnant women about oral and dental health (P<0.05). Conclusion: According to the obtained results of this study, there is a relationship between Oral and dental health of pregnant women and their education and awareness level toward required actions to protect it. it is the task of Health Care Ministry of every country to consider comprehensive programs in order to increase awareness level of mothers and improve oral and dental situation of mothers, babies, and future population of country. it will be possible to have healthier mothers and children in society.
