Abstract:

The solvent based enhanced oil recovery methods have great potential for recovery from heavy oil reservoirs. The feasibility of such processes depends on hydrocarbon solvent dissolution into heavy oil; therefore an accurate investigation of molecular diffusion of solvents into heavy oil is essential. The purpose of this study is to experimentally investigate the mass transfer of three types of solvents into two oil types by free fall diffusion method. Pentane, hexane and octane were made in contact with heavy oil in absence and presence of porous media in a test tube at constant temperature. The diffusivity of heavy oil into solvent was recorded by a digital camera. The image analysis technique was applied to obtain concentration distribution along diffusion zone by means of calibration curves. The second Fick's law was used as governing equation for modeling of diffusion coefficient at any time. Experimental results showed that the diffusion coefficient of solvents into heavy oil was in range of 10-6 - 10-5 cm2/sec which is in agreement with literature. It was observed that the diffusion coefficient is a strong function of oil concentration. The presence of tortus path resulted in lower values of diffusion coefficient compared with bulk media. It was obtained that solvent with higher molecular weight led to higher molecular diffusion coefficient. It is anticipated that the results of this work can be helpful for better understanding and designing of solvent based EOR processes.
