Abstract:

Liquefaction behavior of suction caissons with different aspect ratios were investigated numerically. Finn -Byrne model was applied as the model for pore pressure generation calculations. Finn-Byrne model is based on volumetric response and its parameters control pore pressure generation. A fully coupled mechanical -fluid analysis approach was used for this simulation. Rayleigh damping was applied to the soil medium. Zero thickness interface element was assumed between the caisson and the soil medium. The geometry of the model was approximated by plane strain condition. The results showed that the amount of pore water pressure generations and effective stresses inside the caissons were greater in comparison to outside the caissons. These phenomena can be attributed to the effect of the caisson confinement and surcharge loading subjected from the caisson, respectively. According to the results, the liquefaction induced settlement of the caisson was because of the liquefaction outside of the caisson not inside the caisson.
