خلاصه مقاله:
Introduction: Type 2 Diabetes mellitus (DM2) is mostly associated with macro and micro vascular damages. The pulmonary complications of diabetes mellitus have beenpoorly characterized. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of chronic hyperglycemia on lung function in patients with DM2. Materials and Methods:This cross-sectional study involved 40 DM2 patients attending to the diabetic outpatient department between April to December 2017. Fasting and post prandial blood glucose levels, pulmonary function parameters such as Forced Vital Capacity (FVC), Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 second (FEV1), FEV1 /FVC, Total Lung Capacity (TLC) were measured for all the participants. Forty age and sex matched non-diabetic subjects were included as controls. Results: The mean age of patients and controls were 57.126.93 and 56.528.07 years (P=0.8). Male/female ratio was 13/27 in DM2 group. This study clearly showed a statistically significant reduction in FVC, in type 2 diabetics as compared to those in the controls (71.02 17.48 and 84.59.0, P<0.05). FEV1/FVC% was increased in type 2 diabetics as compared to that in controls and the increase was statistically significant (111.729.90 and 101.8010.25, P<0.001). Additionally, there was statistically significant decrease in mean TLC in patients compare to controls (98.4724.02 and 108.1521.74, P=0.04). Conclusion: DM2 can adversely affects the mechanical functions of the lung, primarily restrictive in nature. The impaired respiratory function may give way for the development of pulmonary complications. Spirometry can be used as a screening tool among diabetics as an early preventive measure.
