Abstract:

Over the past three decades, orally disintegrating tablets (ODTs) have gained much attention as a preferred alternative to conventional oral dosage forms such as tablets and capsules. An ODT is a solid dosage form that disintegrates and dissolves in the mouth without water .The purpose of the present study was to prepare orally disintegrated tablet of famotidine. Natural materials have advantages over synthetic ones since they are chemically inert, non-toxic, less expensive, biodegradable and widely available. It is proved from the studies that natural polymers are more safe and efficacious than the synthetic polymers.In this investigation we compared the efficacy of natural disintegrants such as plantago ovata and cucurbita maxima with chemical ones such as crosscarmellose, and sodium starch glycolate, for preparation of desirable famotidine ODTs. The tablets were evaluated for weight variation, hardness, friability, assay, disintegration time, palatability and in-vitro dissolution study. The best formulation was composed of mannitol ,sodium croscarmellose (3%),magnesium stearate (1%) and sodium saccharin (3%). The tablets had 19.3N hardness, 0.9% friability and disintegrated in 7.3 seconds.
