A Preliminary Study on Myiasis-Causing Flies in Kerman City, Southeast of Iran

Abstract:

Background: Some medically important flies cause disease such as Myiasis and some are known as a vector for a wide variety of pathogens to humans and animal. Identifying the species of the medically important flies can help to the control of these insects and preventing of disease. There is no study on medically important flies in Kerman city, southeast of Iran.Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the diversity of medically important flies in Kerman city.Material and Methods: The flies were collected using plastic water bottle fly trap with chicken liver. This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted from April to September 2019 in Kerman city, southeast of Iran. Monthly sampling carried out in three sites of breeding places of flies in Kerman city. The captured specimens were collected and referred to Department of vector biology and control, School of Health, Kerman University of Medical Science, and identified by using valid systematic key of flies.Results: During this study totally, 537 flies from three families of Diptera including: Muscidae, caliphoridae and Sarcophagidae were captured and identified. Also based on identification, species of medically important flies including Lucilia sericata, Calliphora vicina, sarcophaga argyrostama, Sarcophaga africa, Sarcophaga variegate, Sarcophaga aegyptiaca, Muscina stabulans and Musca domestica were captured. In generally the results of this study showed that, there were one peaks of activity in May.Conclusion: The present study confirms that there are three families of medically important flies, in Kerman city. In conclusion, it is suggested that more studies conducted on othe location in this area to better find the diversity of medically important flies in Kerman city
