Abstract:

Background: Head lice are the insects that are considered as external parasites of human and today are considered as one of the health problems in different societies. Head lice infestation is called pediculosis, which is more common in children aged 5 to 14 years. Primary school students are more likely to be exposed due to close contact with each other. Objectives: The present study was done aimed to determine frequency of head louse infestation frequency in primary schools students of Sanandaj County and related factors on it, 2016.Material and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. The statistical population of this study was elementary students of Sanandaj County who were randomly selected using cluster random sampling method. For this purpose, a questionnaire previously used in other studies was used. To examine the students infestation with head lice, all parts of the head, especially the areas around the ears and behind the head, were carefully examined. The presence of egg (nit) or live lice was considered as a contamination with pediculosis. SPSS software version 20 was used to analyze the data. Results: Totally, 24.2% of them were infested with head lice. The highest rate of infestation was observed in grade 6 of elementary school students and the lowest ones in the grade 1 of elementary students. There was relationship between grade and head louse infestation (p <0.001). The students who lived in high populations families (8 and more) were more infested to pediculosis than other students (p=0.006).Conclusion: The results of the study indicated that parents lack of attention to personal hygiene of the students has increased the rate of head lice infestation among the students. It is recommended that educational classes be conducted to improve the knowledge and attitude of parents towards head lice. It seems that in order to better control of head lice infestation in the schools, in addition to students, other family members should also be treated to control of pediculosis
