THE EFFECTIVENESS OF A MODEL-BASED INTERVENTION ON PREVENTION HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS IN DRUG DEPENDENT WOMEN

Abstract:

Background and Aim : Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is one of sexually transmitted infections (STI) which people with drug dependent have awareness of it. HPV can cause genital warts and cancer. Drug abuse is associated with an increased unsafe sex and risk of STIs. This study aimed to examine the effect of an educational intervention based on the health belief model (HBM) on protective sexual behaviors among female drug abusers.Methods : This study was a randomized controlled trial. Eighty drug dependent women with including criteria; 18 years old and above, and sex acting from ten drop-in centers located in Tehran were entered into the study using convenience sampling. The center were allocated via randomize and divided into intervention and control groups. A self-administered questionnaire collected data before intervention, and one month after intervention. Data were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA.Results : The model-based education intervention had a significant effect on the Perceived Susceptibility, Perceived Severity, Perceived Benefits, and Self-Efficacy scores (p<0.001). The scores of Perceived Barriers did not change significantly (p> 0.05(.Conclusion : The intervention based on HBM had a positive effect on the women’s opinions regarding HPV protective behaviors, if it was done for long time.
