EFFECT OF A SHORT INTERVENTION ON CIGARETTE SMOKERS AT THE PREVENTIVE MEDICINE CLINIC IN TABRIZ,IRAN

Abstract:

Background and Aim : In the recent decades, there are a great growth in cigarette smoking amounts. Although the developed countries are progressively regulating actions to limit cigarette smoking, this is not the case in developing countries where cigarette smoking amounts are more. The aim of this study was to determine effect of a short intervention on cigarette smokers at the preventive medicine clinic in Tabriz, the most populated city in northwestern IranMethods : A quasi-experimental study was done to compare the effect of a short intervention depend on the 5A ideal at the preventive medicine clinic and the routine care delivered at the other control clinic(family medicine clinic). During a 3 months period, cigarette smokers looking for care at these clinics were suggested to take part in the study. The sampling method was convenient. After a year of intervention all participants were assessed.Results : Out of 253 cigarette smokers were called up for the study; 81% of them finished the study. 25.4% of cigarette smokers expressed abandoning cigarette smoking partly for 3 month in the prevention medicine clinic versus 10.5% in the family medicine clinic (p value < 0.05). more than 90% of cigarette smokers in the preventive medicine clinic were asked, advised , assessed, and assisted for smoking cessation in comparison with less than 10% in the family medicine clinic (p value < 0.05).Conclusion : a short intervention depend on the 5A ideal at the preventive medicine clinic for smoking quitting is achievable and may be have a considerable effect in decreasing cigarette smoking rate.
