Abstract:

Background and Aim : The aim of the present study was to estimate the prevalence and risk factors of HIV infection among people who inject drugsMethods : In this review article, four international databases (Medline/PubMed, Embase, ScienceDirect and Google Scholar) and two national databases (Scientific Information Database and MagIran) were searched in 2019. Thereafter, Persian and English papers referring to the prevalence and risk factors of HIV infection among people who inject drugs were included. Results : A total of 42 papers were found in the initial search of the databases and 15 papers were included for final review. Injecting drug use was identified in 148 countries and the presence of HIV infection among injectors had been reported in 120 of these countries. Areas of specific concern are countries in Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, and Latin America, where the prevalence of HIV infection among some subpopulations of people who inject drugs has been reported to be over 40%. Indeed, the prevalence of HIV infection among injecting drug users was reported to be zero in only eight of 148 countries. Globally, it is estimated that about 3 million of people who inject drugs are living with HIV and Sharing of equipment used for injecting drug use was a substantial cause of disease burden and a contributor to blood-borne virus transmission. Conclusion : The high prevalence of HIV among many populations of injecting drug users represents a substantial global health challenge. However, existing data are not adequate, in both quality and quantity, particularly in view of the increasing importance of injecting drug use as a mode of HIV transmission in many regions, therefore, the implementation of educational and counseling programs for individuals, especially in among people who inject drugs is essential
