Abstract:

Background and Aim : Identification of risk factors that influence initiation and Exacerbates of sexual dysfunction is important, therefore, the aim of the present study was to estimate the prevalence and risk factors of sexual dysfunction in persons with drug dependence.Methods : In this review article, four international databases (Medline/PubMed, Embase, ScienceDirect and Google Scholar) and two national databases (Scientific Information Database and MagIran) were searched in 2019. Thereafter, Persian and English papers referring to the prevalence and risk factors of sexual dysfunction were included.Results : A total of 61 papers were found in the initial search of the databases and 18 papers were included for final review. Many studies reported that the prevalence of erectile dysfunction is high in men of all ages and increases greatly in the elderly. Sexual dysfunction is often associated with chronic pain and has been associated with opioid use. Alcohol and drugs can affect sexual function by disrupting or changing levels of neurotransmitters.Conclusion : Sexual dysfunction is a very common and prevalent chronic problem among people who use drugs worldwide. Alcohol, nicotine and other illicit drugs such as Cannabis, Heroin and crack are reported have hazardous effects on sexual function. Therefore, the implementation of educational and counseling programs for individuals, especially in adolescence and youth, and drug and alcohol users is essential.
